Lucky Plazas
By Koh Hong Teng and Sonny Liew
5 - 25 September 2009 (Reception: 4 September 2009)
Lucky Plazas showcases the recent works of award-winning artists Koh Hong Teng and Sonny Liew, following their "Half Flat" group show in 2008 at the Black Earth Art Museum. The new show sees both artists explore issues about Singaporean identity in their own unique ways. Koh Hong Teng ti continues his 'BLKS & NOS' art series with 6 new paintings where the subject of compositions is uniquely Singaporean. They focus on the common landscape of Singapore by enhancing the scenes through highlighting the interesting features that are often unnoticed. The challenge is to capture the strong identity of these features in a poignant and vivid manner. Sonny Liew's new series "Eric Khoo is a Hotel Magnate" meanwhile explores the tensions between private and public identities, social divides and the language of public discourse in Singapore, in a series of narrative paintings utilising comic book tropes and conventions."
