'Lucky Plazas' by Koh Hong Teng and Sonny Liew

Lucky Plazas showcases the recent works of award-winning artists Koh Hong Teng and Sonny Liew, following their "Half Flat" group show in 2008 at the Black Earth Art Musuem. The new show sees both artists explore issues about Singaporean identity in their own unique ways. Koh Hong Teng continues his ‘BLKS & NOS’ art series with 6 new paintings where the subject of compositions is uniquely Singaporean. They focus on the common landscape of Singapore by enhancing the scenes through highlighting the interesting features that are often unnoticed. The challenge is to capture the strong identity of these features in a poignant and vivid manner. Sonny Liew's new series "Eric Khoo is a Hotel Magnate" meanwhile explores the tensions between private and public identities, social divides and the language of public discourse in Singapore, in a series of narrative paintings utilising comic book tropes and conventions."

This exhibition presents a distinctive selection of Chinese contemporary art that teases the senses and invites a closer inspection. From the dreamy playful sculptures of award-winning artist Zhang Hua and the dramatic, dense images of Liang Chang Sheng, to the exaggerated floating figures of Lu Peng, each artwork is imaginatively charged. Also part of the showcase are the imposing canvases of the much sought after artist Jiang Huan which are alluringly real, richly detailed and yet full of mystique. Together the works of the four artists erupt with colour,
movement and come alive with layers of stories. It promises to be a treat to behold.

'Beyond Simplicity' by Simon Wee

The palette is limited but produces dramatic effects. Drenched in saturated red, black with hints of white and gold, the canvases however are easily recogonisable as Simon Wee’s creations. The artist known for his minimalist, calligraphic strokes impresses with larger, bolder creations that also bear the mark of his brushwork and careful composition. The exhibition titled ‘Beyond Simplicity’ will offer a selection of these creations as well as some of his signature older works.

'Images Breakdown 2' by Kaz Orii (Exhibition Opening: 21 Jan 2009)

Kaz Orii was born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. His paintings took root from Cubism 10 years ago when he first began his career as an Artist. Since then his creations have evolved to a maturity of soulful originality. His constant search in attaining “Wabi Sabi” in his art led him to gradually discard representation through the years whilst continuing to subversively encompass contemporary concerns in many layers. He taps inspirations from his own intrinsic realms; the experiences and knowledge of being Japanese in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo in juxtaposition with his vivid love for nature. Do join us in witnessing his recent break through, as he composed in harmony, “Images Breakdown 2”, a series of paintings that seem to take the likeness of urban images taken from satellite photographs rendered in a myriad of colours, inspired by the seasonal shades of the pride of Japan’s very own nature reserves.
